15 minutes of animated/live action craziness. It has been nearly 2 years since day 1, and man it has been a pretty crazy ride. Here is a basic timeline:
Jan. 2nd, 2007: First day of classes at LA Film School. A class of 60 in a classroom that can only handle 30.
Early March, 07: Starting writing Stonerds because I needed something to do through the "learn all approach" to film making. As much as I appreciate understanding all the work behind every field, I found myself doodling a lot. I had recently re-watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and I decided to do something similar.
April.. ish, 07: I saved the final version of Stonerds. We'd later cut a scene and an entire character from the script out of limitations.
July: Proposed the film to the school and got harsh criticism. Being called "too ambitious for even the experienced film maker" or "a long step for someone with little to no film experience, try something easier. You know, more you." From that point on I really knew I was on my own for this one, yet I got the best support from the students, and very little notice from any teachers beyond the editing/effects department.
September 20th-25th, 07: Shot Stonerds, enduring many hurdles within a very strict 5 day production period. First day was horrible, 6 hour delay due to poor management at the school's permit office. That was only one of the many problems we had with the school.
December 1st: Stonerds was virtually done except for animation, we managed to get a screening at the school, but it was rough with a ton of animatics. People really only laughed at my half ass "Notes to the audience" than the story. After being stuck in an editing bay for 2 days straight, I sent the film to our animator Adny Angrand in Florida.
December 20th, 2007: Graduated LA Film, glad that was passed me. As much as I learned, & many friends as I gained, I still can't say whether it was worth it after the amount of disrespect they give to their students. Whatever, it's behind me.
Fast forward to August 2008. I had found myself at interviews going no where and grabbing odd jobs on the net. At this point we had to overcome a number of problems integrating tradtional (hand drawn) 15 framerate animation to a 23.97 framerate HD film. After nearly hopeless, I received a video file from Adny where everything was beautifully in sync. We had done it. With that behind me, and Adny finishing up things, I came up with the concept for the now [link] website.
September 25th, 2008: I receive the final animation from Adny. Time for me to get back to real work editing and compositing final effects. Lastly, we sent things to Stephenie Goldstein for final sound prep.
November 7th, 2008: Stonerds is released to the public via [link]
From here, I don't know. We have a couple of festivals to hit up, and are looking for new opportunities wherever we can. I can only hope for the best!!
Thanks for holdin' strong everyone!!!!!!!
V.
